Hey girl hey! Confidence is a mindset—but don’t worry, it can be cultivated. So many of us have internalized negative thought patterns that have weakened our self-confidence, but mentally and emotionally overcoming low self-confidence is possible. Fortunately, it’s easy to begin the process of improving and restoring confidence. With this simple guide, you can amp up the self love and start feeling more confident today!
Take care of yourself: With so many demands placed on us every day, it’s easy to cut corners when it comes to ourselves. Fortunately, that’s an easy fix. To feel more confident in your skin, make sure you cover the basics:
Get adequate sleep
Drink enough water
Confidence is about looking and feeling your best, and that’s not possible when you’re sleep deprived, dehydrated, and sedentary. Start by making sure you get at least 7-9 hours of sleep nightly, drink at least 8 glasses of water daily, and exercise at least 3 times weekly. This is a foundation that can be built upon. Remember, our bodies are each different, and these are merely guidelines.
Invest in clothes that fit: The great thing about clothing sizes is that nobody sees them but you. Additionally, sizes vary a great deal between brands—and sometimes even within the same brand! Aside from being frustrating, unregulated sizing can also make you feel bad about yourself, especially when you don’t fit into your expected size. That said, there’s no reason to squeeze into a size that doesn’t flatter you. You will feel more confident (and comfortable!) wearing clothes that fit well and accentuate your features. If the size on the tag brings you down, remember that sizing is woefully inaccurate—and cut the tag off!
Trust your inner voice: Intuition is a lost art, and it should come as no surprise that doubting ourselves and our gut feelings leads to low self-confidence. Get back in touch with your intuition and start trusting your gut and the decisions you make. Don’t tolerate situations or people that raise red flags. When you eliminate the circumstances that bring on bad feelings, your inner confidence can shine. There is something uniquely satisfying about taking the reins and trusting your inner voice—and it breeds confidence!
Accept yourself: This is the most difficult step, but the most rewarding. Accepting yourself for who you are can seem radical in a world where we’ve been taught to be disappointed by our own imperfections. But, the relationship we have with ourselves is the most important relationship we’ll ever have. Next time you start spiraling, remember to differentiate between the things you have the power to change and the things you don’t. If you possess the power to change something and you want to change it, by all means, start the process. It’s never too late! If, however, it’s something you can’t change, like your height, build, scars, or hair texture, learn to embrace it, as whatever it is makes you uniquely you! The most confident people you know are the ones who celebrate themselves and accept themselves in spite of all their imperfections.
Following the steps above to take care of yourself, invest in flattering clothing, trust your voice, and—above all else—accept yourself, will lead to a lifetime of higher spirits. Start feeling more confident today!
